PRP for Hair Loss

PRP Hair Restoration in Pasadena, CA

Hair loss (thinning hair, bald patches, or receding hairline) may be successfully treated, for many patients, with PRP injections into the scalp where hair is thinning. The platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, with its high concentration of growth-factor proteins, stimulates natural hair growth and supports it by increasing blood supply to the hair follicles and the thickness of the hair shaft.

Your clinician will administer medication to ease your discomfort during the injections. After treatment, you may experience some redness, swelling, soreness, and bruising at the injection sites. These effects generally resolve in a day or two. Because the PRP is obtained from your own blood, there is no risk of allergic reaction or infection from the PRP itself. Talk with your provider before treatment about any allergies to pain medication.

PRP treatment for hair loss requires a series of treatments spaced four to six weeks apart. In addition, maintenance treatments may be necessary every four to six months.

What to Expect During PRP Hair Loss Treatment

During your consultation, your doctor will discuss hair loss, perform a scalp assessment, and possibly order blood work to test for vitamin deficiencies or thyroid issues. They will set expectations for PRP hair restoration treatment and review all potential complications and risks of PRP treatments. They’ll also instruct you on post-procedure restrictions, such as washing your hair and exercising.

We will draw blood, typically from a vein below your elbow, to start the procedure. During the ten minutes it takes to purify the blood through a specialized centrifuge, we will numb the treatment site if to reduce discomfort. Anesthetics could come in various forms, including a topical cream or an injection.

After preparing the area with an alcohol swab, your physician will inject the purified PRP into the target area of hair loss. The injections are quick and relatively painless and require no recovery or downtime. The entire process is over within an hour. The benefits should become visible within four months.

FAQs for PRP Hair Restoration

How long do PRP hair restoration treatments take?

PRP treatments are quick and convenient, usually taking less than an hour. First, we draw blood, usually from your arm, which takes about ten minutes. We then take another ten minutes to purify the blood, plus another ten to 15 minutes to inject the PRP into the treatment sites.

How many PRP hair restoration treatment sessions will it take to boost my hair growth?

Although treatment protocols vary from patient to patient, a good benchmark is four treatments at four-week intervals. We suggest that patients continue maintenance sessions every six to eight weeks afterward, depending on their needs.

What can I expect during a PRP hair restoration treatment?

Although PRP is a highly tolerable procedure, we often administer an anesthetic to ensure patient comfort during the process. In addition, because the treatments are quick with few side effects, many patients return to their normal activities immediately after their treatments.

What is PRP hair restoration recovery like?

You can expect mild soreness and possibly a minor headache after PRP hair restoration. This slight discomfort will resolve within a few days. However, patients can expect no significant downtime and should be able to return to normal activities immediately after treatment.

We do recommend you avoid strenuous activities for a few days after treatment.
